Kalavryta Ski Resort
Kalavrita Ski Resort is one of the top winter destinations in the Peloponnese and the second largest ski resort in Greece. Situated at an altitude ranging from 1,700 to 2,340 meters, it is one of the most well-organized ski resorts in the country with several ski runs of all degrees of difficulty, making the resort suitable for all skill levels. It has been operating since 1988 and has 13 ski runs of 12 km total length, 8 lifts, parking lots, cafeteria, restaurant, ski rental shop, ski school and first aid station. Amongst the lifts is the Styga lift, which climbs to the top of Neraidorachi where the Aristarchos observatory is located at an altitude of 2,340 meters. The ski run starting from that point challenge even the most expert skiers and snowboarders. In addition, Kalavrita Ski Resort has a Snow-Fun-Park and a Kids-Snow-Park so kids can make their first steps in skiing, while playing.
Kalavrita ski resort is situated on the northwest side of Mount Helmos, 14 km from the town of Kalavryta and 203km/126mi from Athens. Due to its close proximity to Athens and its excellent facilities, many skiers and snowboarders visit it during the ski season. The ski resort is open daily from December to April from 09:00 a.m. to 16 p.m. There are two snowploughs that keep the road clean 24 hours a day for easy and safe driving. To get there is very easy. Coming from Corinth, you have to follow E65 and exit towards the Provincial Road Poumta-Kalavrita. Follow the road to Kalavrita and continue on the Provincional Road Kalavrita-Filia. After approximately 7km/4.3mi, turn left and follow the road to the ski resort.
An excursion to the ski resort can be combined with a visit to the recently build Aristarchos telescope at the top of Neraidorachi (2,340m). The telescope is the biggest in the eastern Mediterranean with a diameter of 2.3 meters. You can also take a tour in the Achaia vineyards, visit to the legendary Monastery of Agia Lavra or explore the galleries of the Cave of the Lakes. The area boasts several guesthouses and luxurious hotels to stay and traditional tavernas with home-cooked meals to dine. The closest villages to the ski resort are Kalavrita, Klitoria, Plantero and Zachlorou.
