A Natural Spa Retreat in the Mountains of Xanthi

Nestled in the mountainous region of Thermes in the Municipality of Myki, the thermal springs of Thermes are one of Northern Greece’s best-kept wellness secrets. Located 42 km from the city of Xanthi, these naturally heated springs emerge from a rich geothermal field known for its therapeutic benefits, offering visitors a unique alternative tourism experience.

The village of Thermes consists of four charming mountain settlements—Ano Thermes, Mesa Thermes, Kato Thermes, and Loutra Thermes—built along streams and natural watercourses. In this lush setting, 46 hot springs bubble up from the earth, with water temperatures ranging from 18°C to 53°C. At the main thermal bath complex, waters start at a soothing 38°C and reach up to 53°C, ideal for hydrotherapy.

Rich in carbon dioxide, low in salts, and free of hydrogen sulfide, the water is particularly beneficial for:

  • Musculoskeletal disorders
  • Nervous system conditions
  • Peripheral vascular diseases
  • Various skin conditions

A Tranquil Retreat with Expanding Facilities

While the area is still developing its tourist infrastructure, recent years have seen significant improvements. A newly built guesthouse complex with 25 rooms (accommodating up to 50 guests) welcomes wellness seekers in comfort. The community hydrotherapy center, located in the main square of Thermes, has been fully renovated and now features modern spa facilities, alongside an on-site medical clinic.

Just a short walk from the center, outdoor thermal basins await—where steaming waters reach 60°C, allowing bathers to unwind with stunning views of the surrounding mountains and flowing streams. Nearby, a natural spring fountain offers therapeutic drinking water, recommended for digestive and urinary health.

These healing springs belong to the carbonate-rich (acid carbonate) thermal water category, scattered harmoniously throughout the valley and waiting to be explored.
