Kato Gatzea

Kato Gatzea is a pretty quiet fishing village on the west side of the Pelion peninsula, surrounded by immense large olive groves. It lies approximately 15km from the regional capital city of Volos and only a few kilometers away from some of the most famous mountain villages of Pelion such as Pinakates, Vizitsa and Milies. The small seaside village has recently developed into a tourist resort attracting tourists throughout the year but mainly during summer. Kato Gatzea is an attractive little village with stone houses with beautiful courtyards and a small but picturesque harbor. It has a narrow but long beach area consisting of a combination of sand and small pebbles. Although the beach itself is not overwhelming you come here for the typical Greek atmosphere, the quietness and the beautiful surroundings.

Along the waterfront, you can find some seafood taverns, overlooking the tranquil harbor and some traditional hostels to choose from. The taverns serve the local "tsipouro" (a kind of distillate) with the corresponding fish snacks and offer nice views to the Pagasetic Gulf. Between Kato Gatzea and Kala Nera, directly on a beautiful beach section, there is also a campsite.

There is not much to see in Kato Gatzea, but the wider area is rich in sights. Just a kilometer to the north lies the monastery of Agia Triada (Holy Trinity), built on the remains of a Venetian castle. The monastery sits on the top of a hill and offers a magnificent view to the Pagasetic Gulf. It is also worth visiting the stone bridge at the railway station in Ano Gatzea, through which passes the Pelion train which connects Ano Lechonia with Milies as well as the olive mill with its museum. Not far from Kato Gatzea, lies the picturesque village of Agios Georgios Nilias, built at an altitude of 700 meters above sea level with endless views of the bay and the surrounding area. There is a scenic walk on the kalderimi (cobblestone path) from the village of Agios Georgios to the seaside settlement of Kato Gatzea, passing through the train station of Ano Gatzea. As you walk downhill, you will enjoy great views to Pagasitikos Gulf, cross a stream in a picturesque setting, pass under the stone bridge in Ano Gatzea and by the Olive Museum.
