Renes - Lighthouse

Route 6 comes to an end on the southeastern edge of Skyros island at Cape Lithari. There stands a two-storey stone lighthouse that was named Lithari because it is built on the rocks. Built in 1894, it is the only lighthouse in Greece constructed with a two-storey building at the base of the tower. The old system of rotating mirrors needed "winding" every fifty minutes. Today it is not supervised and has been equipped with an automatic mechanism. For twenty years it has been working with photovoltaic systems.

The route starts from Renes bay and crosses the plateau at the spot known as Aragades. Herds of purebred or half-bred Skyrian Horses can often be seen there. The scenery is impressive with cliffs plunging into the blue waters. From April to October one’s companions along the path to the lighthouse are Eleonora’s Falcons, an endangered hawk that nests on steep cliffs. Skyros is home to the largest colony in the world. The last part of the trail is a steep slope where the old path is still in good condition. In 2012 the Ministry of Tourism and Culture designated the lighthouse as a monument both because of its architectural construction as well as its original mechanism, as it is an important technical and scientific testament to lighthouse lighting systems at the end of the 19th century.
