Paleochora - Mesagros (in the Forest)
Before you start the cycling route or hiking route you can visit Paleochora and its churches, a region that has been the capital of the island for many centuries to protect the inhabitants from pirates' raids.
The route starts with the downhill asphalt road and after 700m turn right into the forest road to Eastern direction in the pine forest. In addition to the pine trees, we host Juniperus, Salvia officinalis, Thymus capitatus, Teucrium polium herbs, and algae and ankles.
In this area as well as in all the mountainous pine-covered areas of the island the inhabitants collected and marketed the rosin for the wine and the production of the cloud as a solvent for the oil paints. This type of pine (Pinus halepensis) has significantly higher production than all other species. Collection of rosin and blending with wine for taste and preservation is an age-old job. During the revolution of 1821, Aegina was a center for the supply of rosin for boats and firecrackers.
At the end of the forest road the asphalt road leads to the village Mesagros. Here is the fertile central plain of the island, where, according to the local tradition, the ancient comic poet Aristophanes had his estates.
Mesagros occupies the prominence in the ancient Aeginian ceramics known since ancient times. There were many workshops in the area that supplied the raw material for the clay from the slopes of the surrounding mountains and today there are still two traditional workshops in the settlement that still manufacture clay and decorative objects. The famous Aiginal pots with their porous texture have the ability to keep the water cool and in the past formed the summer "water fridge" for the whole of Greece. Mesagros is only a few km from the Temple of Aphaia.
The course as a whole is the hiking route 8 of the network of Cultural Paths.
The course is well marked, while at the beginning and at crucial points of the route there are signs of information and direction.
