Guide to Kamariotissa, Samothrace's Lively Port Town
Kamariotissa is Samothrace’s main port town, a lively yet charming coastal village located 5 km from Chora, the island’s capital. Situated on the western side of the island, near the Makrivrachos Peninsula, it is the first sight that greets travelers arriving by ferry from Alexandroupoli.
A Hub of Convenience & Hospitality
Despite its small size, Kamariotissa is the island’s commercial and transportation hub, offering a range of shops, ATMs, banks, and car rental services. Visitors will find plenty of accommodation options, as well as traditional tavernas serving authentic local cuisine.
The village takes its name from the Church of Panagia Kamariotissa, which houses a miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary. Nearby, Kamariotissa features a rocky beach, a picturesque aeolian windmill park, and a small lagoon.
Just 2.5 km away, you’ll find the archaeological site of Mikro Vouno, an ancient prehistoric settlement that thrived until 1700 BC. Among the most significant discoveries are clay seals from the Middle Bronze Age (19th–18th century BC).
A Perfect Base for Exploring Samothrace
Strategically located between the northern and southern parts of the island, Kamariotissa serves as an ideal base for day trips, allowing visitors to explore Samothrace’s stunning landscapes, historical sites, and pristine beaches with ease.
