Arkasa

Arkasa is a small village located on the southern coast of Karpathos Island. The village has retained its traditional character, with narrow streets and beautiful houses with colorful gardens. The main square of the village is a popular meeting place for locals and visitors, and it is framed by cafes, taverns, and shops. Within short distances, you will find beautiful beaches to swim, such as Agios Nikolaos and Paleokastro. Known for its crystal-clear waters and white sand, the beach of Agios Nikolaos is a popular spot for swimming, sunbathing and surfing. Beyond this gorgeous beach, Arkasa is also known for its cultural heritage. The village has several churches that date back to the Byzantine period, such as the Church of Agia Anastasia, and churches from the post Byzantine period such as Agios Georgios and Panagia Marmarini. The village also has an archaeologicall and folklore museum that showcases the traditional way of life on the island. Below the village, on a high cliff that juts out into the sea lies Paleokastro where there are ruins of an ancient city. Parts of the defensive wall are still extant. 

The history of Arkasa dates back to ancient times, with archaeological evidence indicating that the area was inhabited as early as the 5th millennium BC. Today, it is a popular tourist destination that attracts visitors from all over the world. Arkasa is located about 16 kilometers west of Pigadia, and some 2 kilometers south of the small fishing village of Finiki. There are many hotels in Arkasa, partly in the village itself, partly down on Agios Nikolaos beach, as well as super markets, a gas station and some other services. The airport is also close by. In conclusion, Arkasa is a beautiful village on Karpathos Island that offers a unique blend of natural beauty, traditional architecture, and rich history. So, take your car, scooter or ATV and get ready to explore this beautiful village.
