Asomatos is one of the top villages to visit in Lesvos. It is smaller than Agiassos but as equally charming. Asomatos is a quiet village, built on the slopes of Mount Olympus. It is located north of Agiassos and west of the Gulf of Gera. This picturesque village boasts a long history and traditional architecture that has been preserved to date. This charming village is home to the three-aisled basilica of Archangels Michael and Gabriel dating to 1796. Here you will also find the Ecclesiastical Museum, the Old School, the building of the oil mill and a few more churches scattered in and around the village. The church of the Archangels celebrates on 8th November each year, day on which a big feast is organized in honor of the Archangels.
Asomatos is well known for its traditional crafts and hand-made baskets. Basket weaving is an art traditionally passed down from father to son, even nowadays many locals are engaged in this art. If you are interested in buying local products, textiles or baskets, the Agrotourist Cooperative of the Women of Asomatos sells high quality local products such as olive oil, herbs and sweets as well as woven textiles and baskets in all sizes and shapes. If in Asomatos or the surrounding area, do not miss to visit “Agii Anargyri”, a stunning location near the village with lots of plane trees and running water. This location is a small oasis on a hot summer day that invites visitors to cool down and have a break in one of the numerous cafes.
