One of Samos' Most Scenic and Must-Visit Villages
Kokkari is a picturesque, seaside village, on the north side of Samos island, 11 kms away from Vathi. It has been developed into a tourist center attracting thousands of tourist every year. Kokkari preserves its old traditional face, with small houses, narrow streets, lanes full of flowers and a picturesque small port. Part of the village is on a small peninsula, full of houses which climb up to the top of the hill. On one side of the peninsula there is the small harbour of the village while on the other side there is a fantastic pebble beach. The village is surrounded by green mountains and the fact that the village combines maountain and sea makes it unique.
According to the author Epameinondas Stamatiades the name of the village originates from the great production of onions seed-bulb (kokkari means onion seed-buld in Greek) that were produced in the area in the past while the folklorist Nikos Dimitriou in his book "Folklore of Samos" states that the name derives from the first settler. The second version is considered more valid since in Samos there were many villages that produced that kind of onions and in larger quantities. In various old documents Kokkari is listed as Krokari.
The village was built at the beginning of the 19th century as a port of the village of Mytilene on the ruins of an early Christian settlement.. The economy of the village relies mainly in tourism. Many years ago Kokkari was famous for the production of dried grapes and sweet pumpkins which people call “lires”. On July 27, the day of the feast of St. Panteleimon, a big festival takes place in the village.
