Chios is the capital of the homonymous island and it is built in the middle of its eastern side. The port of Chios is the largest and most important of the island. The city was built with neoclassical buildings, with clear influences from the nearby Smyrna of Asia Minor. The Vounakiou Square, which houses the City Hall, the Ottoman Mosque (Mezzitie Mosque) that houses the Byzantine Museum of Chios, the Korais Library, founded in 1817 and Adamantios Korais donated to the library the rich collection of his books and also the great Municipal Garden, is an area that harmoniously combines the present with the past of the place. Near the square are preserved the buildings since the Ottoman domination on the island, the Bairakli Mosque, the Osmani Mosque, and the Ottoman fountains.

To the south of the square lies the main street of the city, Applotria. Its’ road crosses the old city and keeps a great deal of the commercial traffic, with many shops and a big market. From the center of the square, Kennedy Street leads to the official gate of the impressive medieval castle of Chios.

Most hotels, restaurants, cafes, travel agencies and other similar services are located around the avenue stretching along the harbor, the Waterfront. A little farther from there, the visitor can discover some of the oldest streets and picturesque alleys.
