Agios Nikitas Lefkada

Agios Nikitas is a small charming village free of cars. Built amphitheatrically on a hillside in a small bay on the west coast of Lefkada Island, is a popular destination renowned for its beautiful surroundings and lovely beaches which can be found in the area. Agios Nikitas has retained all the traditional elements of the past including stone built houses framed by ivy and bougainvillea and narrow cobbled streets that end in a narrow nice sandy beach. The beach itself is fabulous with clear turquoise water and very safe for kids. It has very little natural shade and there are no loungers for rent. Keep in mind that it gets very busy between mid-July and mid-August, so try to get there early in the morning or in late afternoon. Apart from this sandy beach, there are some more pristine beaches nearby, which are worth a visit like Mylos (1 km), Kathisma (2,2 km) and Pefkoulia beach (3 km). Mylos beach can be reached either by water-boat or on foot along a path which starts half-way down the main street.

Till 1970, Agios Nikitas was a small fishing village where most of the locals were engaged in agriculture and fishing. Even today, the area is filled with olive groves and some locals still produce excellent olive oil. In recent years, tourism has helped the village to flourish. Many of the old houses have been renovated and turned into family hotels and studios. The streets of the village are lined with souvenir shops, mini markets, cafes and tavernas where you can enjoy fresh fish and delicious Greek food. There are some hotels, rooms and studios to rent in and on the hills around the village. Agios Nikitas is about 10 kms from Lefkada Town, the island’s capital and is easily accessible by car or bus. It is a perfect destination for relaxing holiday and it can be the base for exploring the west coast of Lefkada Island. The only con is the limited parking space, which makes parking difficult during the high season.
