Nidri
Nidri is ideally located in the middle of an outstanding nature with a magnificent coast and a fantastic hinterland, between Lefkada Town and Vassiliki on the east coast of the island. It is the most developed tourist resort on the island, with thousands of visitors every year. From its busy harbor, depart ferries to the neighboring island of Kafalonia and cruises to Meganisi, Ithaki and Kefalonia. There are also daily boat trips to some of the best beaches on Lefkada. It is the second largest port on the island and the assembly point for the annual Ionian Regatta, the biggest yachting event in the Mediterranean.
There is a nice promenade and a main street with dozens of souvenir shops, cafes, bars, restaurants and other tourism-based services. Along the water, you will find authentic Greek taverns and restaurants, while the main street is heaving with cheery bars and late-night clubs to spend unforgettable nights. Accommodation ranges from affordable rooms to let to luxurious hotels. Some of them are built on the slopes of the surrounding hills and mountains offering great views of the bay and the islands of the Ionian Sea. Nidri boasts a long stretch of pebbly shoreline with crystal-clear and azure water. There is plenty of amenities and things to do and from the shore you can see the islands that dot the horizon. You can engage in many watersports or you can find a shady spot under a tree on the sand. A 20-minute walk north takes you to the pebbly Perigali Beach – a quiet place with sunloungers and umbrellas.
The place offers unique opportunities for outdoor activities, such as swimming in the famous waterfalls of Nidri plus there is a little cluster of islands just off the coat to explore. The cluster is opposite the small village and includes the islets of Madouri, Skorpidi, Sparti and the famous Scorpios Island which belonged to the Onassis family and welcomed members of the global elite. The area around Nidri is perfect for long walks and cycle rides. The German archaeologist Wilhelm Dörpfeld, performed extensive excavations at Nidri and discovered numerous tombs with rich artefacts. The cemetery is believed to be one of the most important monuments of the prehistoric period in the country and a visit is worthwhile. Dörpfeld spent the last years of his life at Nydri and he was buried there. Today, a statue of this great archaeologist stands in the promenade close to the statue of Aristotle Onassis.
Set in a picturesque inlet, the town of Nidri is a favorite Ionian yacht harbor. It is just 17 kilometers south of Lefkada Town and has very easy access on the east coast. Nidri is a perfect destination for vacations as well as a great base for exploring the rest of the island.
