Plakias beach stretches from the harbor to the cliffs around Plakias Bay. Though correctly parts of the beach have different names, the beach is generally known as Plakias beach. It is a nice long and wide sand beach with clear and refreshing water even on the hottest days of August. It covers almost the whole bay and has many different areas. Some are sandy, some have sand and shingle but all are well equipped with sun beds and parasols, usually from the tavernas. Some sun beds are free when buying food or drink from them. There is plenty of parking and numerous of beach front tavernas, cafes and bars to choose from. Surroundings are stunning with both sea and mountain views. The beach is uncrowded even in August and the water is shallow enough for children to enjoy without getting out of depth. There is also a naturalist section to the beach at the furthest end if you want an all over tan.
Make sure to be there for sunset. This beach has the most beautiful sunsets starting at pale pink and finishing off at bright red as the sun goes down. Only downside is the wind due to the location being aligned to the canyon to the north, but still worth. Sure, it is not the most beautiful beach on the island but you can spend a simple and relaxing day by the sea and eat in a tavern nearby. Plakias beach is 34 km from Rethymno and it is very easy to get there by car or bus. The drive is gorgeous, right through the mountains with magnificent views.
