Wreck «Peristera»
The localization of a classic merchant ship, much larger than those found to date has revealed the presumption of the commercial superpower of Athens of Pericles. The ship was discovered in 1985 at the bottom on the west side of the island of Peristera, at a depth of 22-33 meters, and in the years 1992-1993 and 1999 it was excavated by the Ephorate of Marine Antiquities with complete photographic documentation and topographic mapping of the current state of the shipwreck with two telemetry methods.
The ship sank between 425 and 415 BC and transported wine goods from the wine-producing regions of Northern Greece, as well as more than 4,000 amphorae. Its cargo remained undisturbed as if someone had carefully touched it to the bottom of the sea. The number of amphorae, the condition of the shipwreck and the beauty of the water and the bottom of the area, located inside the National Marine Park of the Northern Sporades, make it a unique attraction. For these reasons, the shipwreck of Peristera has been selected by the Ministry of Culture and Sports, along with other shipwrecks in the Pagasitikos and the Northern Sporades, to be converted into a visitable marine archeological site with guided diving.
