Wreck Avantis III

The "Avantis III" was a general cargo ship built in 1977 at the Tronderverftet shipyard, Hommelvik, Norway. It has a length of 80 meters and a width of 13 meters with a total capacity of 2,362 tons. The ship was originally named "Akershus" and was renamed "Avantis III" in 1982 which was bought by the company of Antonis Agrafiotis.

The ship loaded with construction materials and an engine, had sailed from Messolonghi with a final destination Cyprus island. On November 19, 2004 at 3:45 a.m. the "Avantis III" crashed on Dorousa Island, with good weather conditions, and after taking water it sank to its current location. Of the 12 members of the crew (10 Greeks and two foreigners) 11 managed to board the ship's rafts and were saved while the 35 year old cook of the ship, Vassilis Koronis, did not succeed.

The wreck is located at a depth of 17 to 48 meters, facing the North - South axis, is sitting on the seabed with its left side at an angle of 90 degrees while it has remained as it was in its entirety. Its propeller is in place at a depth of 41 meters while its stern crane is resting on the seabed. From this point the engine room area is accessible, while the ship's hold is accessible on both sides and allows a fairly large penetration. Exploration in this wreck must be done with great care as the time that the wreck is at the bottom has begun and causes damage to all parts of the ship, resulting in pieces falling from the roofs of enclosed spaces and even only from the bubbles.

In one of the ship holds there is a large part of the cargo of "Avantis III", while outside the second is the varadero engine. Exploring the inside of the barn we observe the rift caused by the impact on the rocks, which is responsible for its sinking. The area of the ship's deck creates admiration to the divers, finding it in very good condition, all the ship's instruments, the radio, the radar screen and so on.

Continuing the exploration in the rest of the shipwreck we observe the right anchor of the ship that is in its place while the name of the ship is visible in the bow area. The shipwreck has begun and functions as an artificial reef gathering large amounts of marine life, creating a wonderful spectacle for visiting divers.
