Kayaking on the Nestos River
Canoeing or kayaking on the Nestos River in Northern Greece offers a unique outdoor experience suitable for the whole family or a group of friends. It takes you through the Nestos Gorge, one of Europe’s most important natural ecosystems, providing the opportunity to explore the river’s meanders between Stavroupoli and Toxotes. The area is covered by lush green forests that shelter many rare species of birds and wildlife. Nestos is one of Greece’s five largest rivers and a habitat protected by Natura 2000, as well as a Ramsar Convention Wetland of National Importance. Canoeing or kayaking the Nestos River is a must for any outdoor enthusiast. The river winds through a beautiful gorge, creating many meanders. The best way to explore this unique ecosystem is by canoe or kayak.
This exciting 22-kilometer tour starts from the town of Stavroupoli in the Xanthi prefecture, takes you through the narrow passages of the Nestos River with its virgin forests, and ends near the village of Toxotes. The meanders of the river are renowned for their natural beauty. The canoe/kayak tour takes about 4 hours to complete and does not require any special skills. The tour usually includes two stops of about half an hour on the riverbanks for a quick dip in the cool river water, a light snack, and some rest.
If you start in Stavroupoli and kayak all the way to Toxotes, on the way back, you’ll have the chance to visit the Nestos River Observatory to admire the river’s meanders from above. You will also visit the abandoned village of Livera, where, if you’re lucky, you might see herds of wild horses. If you plan to canoe/kayak in the summer, be sure to bring a swimsuit, hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, towel, and, of course, a phone or camera to capture beautiful pictures. We recommend booking in advance so you can join one of the many organized tours on your preferred day.
Organized excursions on the Nestos River are available year-round. The best times to join a tour are in spring, when nature is at its best, or in late summer/early fall, when it’s not too hot. During the winter months, the weather may not be favorable for canoeing or kayaking. If you have limited time, there are also shorter canoe/kayak rides available. Tour companies provide all the necessary equipment, such as kayaks, paddles, waterproof barrels to store your belongings, life jackets, and transportation to and from the starting point.
