Anemotrypa Cave

The Anemotripa Cave in the northern Tzoumerka mountains is a truly unique natural wonder – the only cave in Greece where a river flows along its entire length. History of Anemotripa Cave

The story of the cave begins around 1960, when two young locals, Apostolis Lambris and Georgios K. Karakostas, were tasked by the village council to explore a narrow fissure that emitted cool air. Their exploration coincided with the visit of the renowned spelunker Anna Petrocheilou. Crawling just 10 meters into the passage, they discovered a spacious underground chamber – the beginning of what would become a popular tourist attraction.

Cave Structure and Highlights

Anemotripa Cave consists of three levels:

1. Upper Level – The oldest part of the cave, partially collapsed over time, with some remnants still visible.
2. Middle Level – Developed for tourists, featuring walkways, lighting, and easy access.
3. Lower Level – The riverbed of the underground river, which eventually forms a small waterfall 2 meters high before disappearing into a spring 25 meters below the cave entrance.

Visitors follow a scenic pathway leading to the Chamber of the Red Lake, where tiered rock basins collect flowing water. Delicate stalactites and stalagmites create a magical display, enhanced by three small, naturally formed lakes with hues of grey, pink, and white.

At the end of the trail lies the most striking feature: a deep blue lake, whose color comes not from depth but from quartz crystals at its bottom. Along the cave, visitors can also spot various insects, including unique species of Lepidoptera.

The developed section of the cave measures approximately 270 meters, making it accessible for a guided tour while still retaining its natural charm and mysterious allure.
