Region of Xanthi
The regional unit of Xanthi is located in Northern Greece, in the Greek district of Thrace. Together with the regional units of Rhodope and Evros, it forms the geographical region of Western Thrace. Xanthi borders with Bulgaria to the north and the Aegean Sea to the south. Unlike the rest of Greece’s prefectures (except Rhodope), this regional unit is a melting pot of culture, delicious food, and eastern influence architecture. The region has rich history and the ethnic mix of Greeks, Greek muslims and Pomaks, especially in the villages, is almost unique in the Balkans. Xanthi RU is among Greece’s most significant areas in terms of forestry, and is rich in biodiversity and natural beauty. Nestos River is here, as is Lake Vistonida, Haintous forest, Leivaditis Waterfall and many more natural wonders, awaiting to be explored.
Xanthi, the capital town of the regional unit is a truly amazing city with a beautiful old town. Here, some of the most amazing syrup sweets in Greece are served, such as kazan dipi, suzuk loukoumi and the heavenly saragli. They are authentic desserts made according to tradition and cannot be found anywhere else in Greece. One of the best times to visit Xanthi is during the spring carnival, but the beauty of the area can be admired all year round. The region is a paradise for nature lovers and hikers with a large number of ecotourism units and companies that organize a large number of outdoor activities such as trekking, rafting, archery, mountain biking and more. Read this travel guide to Xanthi, to find out what are the best things to see and do in this regional unit, and more.
