Explore the Ancient Nymphaeum & School of Aristotle

Set in a beautiful landscape of lush vegetation and natural springs, the School of Aristotle is one of the most important historical sites near Naoussa in Imathia. The site is traditionally identified as the place where Aristotle taught the young Alexander the Great and other sons of the Macedonian nobility between 343 and 340 BC.

Alexander spent about three years studying under Aristotle before returning to Pella in 340 BC. His education included philosophy, poetry, mathematics and the natural sciences, and Aristotle's influence played an important role in the intellectual development of the future king.

The existence of the school is mentioned by ancient writers including Plutarch and Pliny. Although the school is believed to have occupied a much larger area, only a small part has been excavated and developed for visitors. The site was identified as the School of Aristotle by archaeologist Foti Petsas in 1965, based on archaeological evidence and ancient written sources.

The archaeological remains include the foundations of a two-storey stoa with Ionic columns, arranged in a Π-shaped layout, together with three natural caves that formed part of the main area of the school. A little farther away is a larger cave with two carved entrances and evidence suggesting that it had a religious function.

Because relatively little of the ancient school survives, visitors should not expect extensive archaeological remains. Instead, the experience comes from standing in a place traditionally associated with one of the most important teacher-student relationships of antiquity and imagining how the area may have looked more than 2,300 years ago.

A good way to begin the visit is at the Cultural Center, where visitors can learn about the history and importance of the monument before exploring the archaeological site. The center includes an exhibition space, conference room, visitor reception area, café and parking facilities. Short videos and information material help make the visit more informative and meaningful.

The School of Aristotle is located at Isvoria, just 2 km from Naoussa, making it an easy addition to a visit to the town and the surrounding attractions. Its combination of archaeological remains, natural surroundings and its extraordinary connection with Aristotle and Alexander the Great makes it a particularly interesting destination for travelers interested in the history and philosophy of ancient Greece.
