Church of Panagia Kanala
The Church of Panagia Kanala is considered the most important religious monument on the island of Kythnos. The church is home to one of the most important icons in the Cyclades, depicting the Virgin Mary holding Jesus in her arms with her left hand while to the left and right are the Archangels Gabriel and Michael. According to legend, local fishermen found an icon of the Virgin Mary in the strait between Kythnos and Serifos. A column of light is said to have guided them right to where the icon was located. Then, according to the same legend, the Virgin Mary appeared in the sleep of the fishermen and indicated to them the place the church was to be built. Though the icon is not at the church today, a work of art stands at its place. The icon you see today, measures 1m x 0.80m and is an example of post-Byzantine art, painted by the great Cretan hagiographer Emmanuel Skordilis.
The church of Panagia Kanala is located in the southeastern part of Kythnos, near the village of Kanala. Kanala, is the only place in Kythnos where you can find pine trees which surround the beautiful orthodox church which has been built on the site of an older church that was demolished in 1869. The courtyard is decorated with stone arches, terraces and colorful flowers and has a cobbled square.
A big celebration takes place every August 15th with the procession and re-enactment of the discovery of the icon. On the eve day, the Great Vespers are chanted, followed by a great festival in the village with traditional music and dancing. The following day, takes place the procession of the icon through the village. Panagia Kanala is the patron saint of Kythnos and the icon is considered miraculous.
