New Market
On the harbor of Mandraki and adjacent to the old town is the New Market (Nea Agora) with its distinctive architecture. A large 7-sided building with a magnificent entrance, round domes and an outdoor central courtyard where the old fish market was located. The marketplace was built by the Italians in the 1920s in the Arabic style. The building is not a market anymore in the traditional sense of the word; thus, it does not have any stalls and local produce. Around the outside of the building there are a few small jewelry and souvenir shops targeting tourists, bustling cafes and a few small food takeaway places. Inside the market courtyard there are even more shops and restaurants. In the center of the courtyard there is an ornate domed building which is probably the most interesting structure. The New Market is great to visit and walk through just to see the impressive building.
