Monolithos Castle
The castle of Monolithos is perched on a 236 meters rock, near the village of Monolithos and approximately 70 km to the south west of Rhodes town. In the old times, it was considered one of the four more powerful fortresses on the island due to its strategic location that allowed a clear view of the Mediterranean. It was built on the foundations of another older Byzantine castle by the Knights of St. John, under the orders of Grand Master D’Aubusson in the 1476 AD, in order to protect the island from pirate attacks. On the rock during Classical times, there was an Ancient Phryctoria (the ancient Greek method of transmitting messages through a complicated system of lighting torches on hillocks very far from one another). The inhabitants of Apolakkia (10 km / 6 miles from Monolithos) used to find shelter in the castle in case of pirate attacks. It is believed that due to its extremely fortified position, the castle was never conquered by enemies. Eventually the Knights were forced to abandon it during the great siege of 1522, to strengthen the defense of the city of Rhodes. With the weakening of piracy during the 17th century, it lost its strategic role and was gradually abandoned.
Most of the castle is widely ruined today. Only some external parts of the fortifications remain in a quite well preserved condition. Within its courtyard are preserved tanks, parts of the towers and galleries, as well as the 15th century chapel of Agios Panteleimon. There is one more small chapel dedicated to St. George but it is in ruins.
Although ruined, this is a must see stop off, as it offers spectacular views over the coastline, the beach of Fourni and the two islets of Alimia and Halki just opposite the coast. It is also the best place to be for the nicest sunset. The road goes as far as the foot of the rock where there is a small free car park. From there a gravel path with lots of steps leads up to the castle. At the base of the car park, there is a little cafe for a drink or a snack and with toilets for clients. It is worth a visit to the castle in conjunction with Fourni beach.
