Archaeological Museum of Thasos
The Archaeological Museum of Thassos is the oldest museum in northern Greece. It is housed in a building of 1934 in the center of the modern capital of Thassos. The museum only looks small from the outside, but you will be amazed of how much history and archaeology can be packed in such a wonderful museum. It has a fabulous collection of Greek artefacts from the Paleolithic to the Byzantine era, and offers a fascinating insight to the past and the opportunity to experience the way of life on the island during different historical periods. Give yourself plenty of time to get around all floors, see all the interesting collections and watch a video about the history of Thassos, and how items within the museum were found is available.
The exhibits include objects from the Iron Age, an amphora from a Neolithic settlement, and a Cycladic plate decorated with a representation of the hero Bellerophon. Particularly noteworthy is a three-and-a-half meter kouros, a head of Alexander the Great, and the statue of a young naked man carrying a goat. Moreover, there are findings from ancient burial tombs, prehistoric jewelry, lots of sculptures, pottery, coins and various everyday objects from the Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic period. You will learn about the importance of mines of Thassos, and of ancient multi medalist Theagenes, a local athlete who won many medals in the ancient Olympic games. The museum is very well organized, and the displays and information boards are in different languages. The staff is helpful and very friendly.
Today the museum covers a total area of 2,376 m2 with fully renovated exhibition galleries, conservation workshops, a gift shop, rooms for study and storage. Due to its central position in Limenas, the capital of Thassos, and close to the Ancient Agora, the museum provides a complete picture of the facets of life in the ancient-city state as well as on the historical role of the island from the prehistoric to the byzantine years. After visiting the museum, a walk up the nearby hill to the ancient theater and other archaeological sites in Thassos Town (Limenas) is a must.
