Historical and Folklore Museum

The museum has 3 floors with a good range of exhibits, neatly grouped with clear labels and explanations that cover the history of Alonissos including the pirates of the Aegean exhibition and the National memory room. The exhibits downstairs cover the traditional crafts and occupations that are in danger of disappearing. There are many glass cases full of tools, weapons, historical information that gives you a fascinating insight into the culture and history of the island. Moreover, there are many interesting artefacts, maps, photos, and themed exhibits concerning the islander’s way of life as well as weapons and objects used in the early days by the pirates of the Aegean Sea. This museum is well worth a visit and a great way to spend some time on a hot afternoon. It is housed in a towering four-storey stone structure seemingly set high above the main port beach at the southwestern corner of Patitiri Bay. It is easy to find it and is well signed. The Museum was founded in 2000 by Kostas and Angela Mavrikis and is the largest privately owned museum on any Greek island. On the top floor there is a cafe with nice views over the harbor.
