Agia Anna beach

Agia Anna Beach is a tiny but stunning pebbly beach on the east coast of Amorgos, just under the monastery of Hozoviotissa. It is where the French film “The Big Blue” was partly filmed, starring Rosanna Arquette, Jean-Marc Barr and Jean Reno. You can drive down most of the way to this beach and then there are steps, however it is fairly easy going down as the steps are gradual. The beach is extremely rocky, so you need sneakers and beach shoes. The scenery however and the water are spectacular. The water is unbelievably clear, and the color is simply amazing. It is also deep so you can get some decent swimming in.

From this beach you get fantastic views of the Monastery; especially if you emerge yourself into the water and swim about 100 meters out to sea and look back into the cliffs. If you are fit, you can also swim to the big rocks that are in the sea just next to the beach, climb and jump off them. There are plenty of areas to sunbathe if you do not mind climbing onto rocks where you can listen to the peaceful sound of the waters trickling around them.

A small negative is that this beach can easily get crowded, so go early if you want to experience it at its best. It is a good place to stop for a swim after a visit to Hozoviotissa Monastery. We would definitely recommend a visit before you leave Amorgos, if you are not looking for a comfy beach. If so, then it is not for you! There is a tiny little snack bar at the top before heading down where you can buy drinks and snacks in case you get hungry. Agia Anna beach is very close by bus or car from the monastery, but buses are not that frequent so renting a car or motorbike would be a good option. The beauty of this beach will make you stay there for hours and hours.
