Pyrgos beach
Pyrgos beach is located on the north west of Andros. The name “Pyrgos” means tower and refers to the Venetian tower of Makrotantalos that now lays in ruins on the coast above the beach. The beach is reached by a dirt track road and lies just over the hill from another stunning but quiet beach, Vlychada. The long and winding road to this beach means it is commonly quiet, if not deserted making it great for getting away from it all. Because of its excellent vantage point out to the Cavo D' Oro straight in the Aegean, this sight has been used for many centuries for monitoring activity out at sea.
The beach itself is golden sand with clean and clear waters. It is well-protected from the winds and perfect for swimming, snorkeling and fishing. Undoubtedly, it is one of the most beautiful beaches of Andros, but also one of the most isolated and inaccessible. The best way to get there is by bike or ATV, NOT by conventional car. Pyrgos beach is 13.9 km (27 mins) from Gavrio, 22.2 km (40 mins) from Batsi, 46.1 km (1 hour and 13 mins) from Chora and 48.2 km (1 hour and 14 mins) from Korthi. On the way to Pyrgos is Vlychada, an equally beautiful beach nestled in a large bay.
