Megali Petra beach
Although Megali Petra beach is not so famous as Porto Katsiki, it is definitely so beautiful and not so crowded. It an amazing beach with white fine pebbles and waters of milky blue color. Megali Petra means "Big Stone" and its name comes from the huge rocks scattered all over the land and in the water. It is located next to Kavalikefta beach, on the west coast of Lefkada, near Kalamitsi village. Huge rocks separate the two beaches and compose a wild and fascinating scenery.
The road starts from the village of Kalamitsi and is steep and narrow with lots of turns. Although, driving towards the beach might be slightly tricky, the route is quite pleasant as it crosses beautiful landscapes and offers amazing views of the open sea, especially when approaching the coast. There are signs all the way down and at the end of the road there are a couple of private car parks. You can park for free along the road, but this will make traffic even harder. From the parking lot starts a 250m steep path leading to the gorgeous beach. Don’t miss the chance to stop for a moment and enjoy the view from above.
Megali Petra is an untouched beach and not so busy, making it perfect for relaxation. The waters are deep and rough most of the time, so swimming might be dangerous when strong winds blow. Sometimes you may find sun loungers and parasols scattered between the rocks but you'd better be equipped with you own umbrella, drinks and snacks as the closest canteen is in the nearby Kavalikefta beach. The fact that it offers a feeling of seclusion and privacy, makes it a perfect destination for free campers and nature lovers. Since it lies on the western side of the island, it also offers magical sunsets.
