The Philippi Festival is one of the most prestigious cultural festivals in Greece and the country’s second-largest arts festival after the famous Athens & Epidaurus Festival. Held in and around the historic city of Kavala, the festival combines ancient drama, music, dance, and contemporary art in some of Northern Greece’s most atmospheric venues.
The festival’s first performance took place in 1957 at the iconic Ancient Theatre of Philippi, located within the UNESCO-listed archaeological site of Philippi. Over the decades, the festival evolved into a major cultural institution, attracting leading Greek actors, musicians, orchestras, and performers.
Since 2009, the Philippi Festival has expanded into a two-month celebration of culture and creativity. While the Ancient Theatre of Philippi remains its symbolic heart, events are now hosted across multiple locations in Kavala, including the Kavala Fortress, the historic Imaret, the Gardens of Mehmet Ali, schools, traditional cafés, and even unique outdoor spaces near Philippi such as the Krinides Mud Baths.
