Varosi
The Varosi quarter is the most attractive district of Edessa. Dotted with beautiful mansions of the 19th century and Byzantine churches, Varosi is located in the city center and is one of the most historic areas and the first Christian district of Edessa. It is built around the citadel of the ancient city and offers great views over the Macedonian plain. The neighborhood keeps its authentic charm and the traditional Macedonian architecture. Strolling around the cobbled alleys is a great experience and offers many photo opportunities. The district was partly burnt by the Germans in 1944 because it was the center of the resistance struggle. Since then, most of the houses have been restored giving the district its former glory. The restoration plan was designed by the Municipality of Edessa and awarded the first prize by the European Union. The Varosi quarter is now a protected settlement and one of the city’s main attractions. Among the houses, there beautiful mansions with wooden shutters, enclosed yards and covered balconies. The most remarkable of all, are the house of Yousmi with its beautiful interior, the mansion of Valasa with a private chapel in the courtyard and the mansion of Tsamis. The district is very close to the waterfall park and to the famous waterfalls of Edessa.
