Collection of Traditional Greek Costumes

This museum houses a wonderful collection of incredibly well-preserved traditional costumes from all over Greece. Steeped in history and meticulously preserved, the collection funded by one of the wealthiest families in the area. The museum opened in 2017 and comprising 50 years of one passionate woman’s collection. Victoria G Karelias has been collecting clothes from various parts of Greece for decades which are now displayed in a renovated stunning 19th century building in the old part of Kalamata. The costumes are displayed on three floors in logical order, some dating back more than 200 years. The settings and the displays are immaculate with an atmospheric music background and are set out in chronological order with explanations on electronic touch tablets in Greek and English. LCD displays showcase each costume from various angles with short descriptions and their origins on a map. Hand-held tablets are available as well. If you prefer, you can exchange an ID for a tablet you can use at your pace, allowing you to take your time, sit down on the benches, admire the costumes, and really read the accompanying text. The collection will transport you back in time to give you a true glimpse of Greek history, culture and people. There is an outdoor area with tables and chairs and a small gift shop with items inspired by the costume and jewelry in the collection. The museum also hosts special events like lectures and concerts in its on-site venue. Staff is very welcoming, helpful and extremely knowledgeable.
