Samothraki Folklore Museum
The Folklore Museum of Samothraki was founded by the Municipality and the Cultural Association of the island. It is housed in a traditional building of the 19th century, next to the church of the Assumption in Chora, the capital town of the island. The museum is home to a collection of traditional objects and offers a glimpse into the island’s heritage and of the way people used to live in the past.
On the ground floor there are various objects associated with livestock, agricultural tools for the processing of thread, and a traditional loom with all its accessories. On the first floor, there is a representation of a Samothrace’s household. One room houses the kitchen, the living room and the bedroom with an iron bed of 1929 and its 20th century fitted wardrobe. The walls are adorned with traditional embroideries and rich photographic material. The collection of the museum also includes beautiful chests and decorative plates from Asia Minor, wool rugs and cotton bedding. Moreover, there is a remarkable collection of local costumes. Finally, there is a carved icon stand of the early 20th century with rare icons that are derived from the island’s churches. Most of the objects come from donations.
The museum is open daily in the summer months from 9:00 a.m. – 14:00 p.m. and from 17:00 p.m. – 21:00 p.m. Entrance fee is 1 euro.
