Museum of Folk Art & History of Salamina
The Folklore Museum of the Municipality of Salamis is housed since October 1998 in a spacious hall of the New City Hall - Cultural Center and bears the name of the Salaminian philologist, folklorist, researcher, Petrou Fouriki Director of the Folklore Archives of the Academy of Athens until 1936. In this museum there is a collection of Folklore items from the life of Salamis and the history of the place. Particularly impressive is the collection of men's and women's local costumes, which began to be made since 1962. The collection of ziponies, takes us back 300 years, gives us a picture of the time and helps us to see the variety and the aesthetic perception in the costumes of the place. Also in this museum are presented furniture of different seasons, looms, household utensils, tools of various professions as well as ceramic and bronze objects of everyday life in original designs. The weapons of the 21st century (sabers, castagnies, karyophiles, pistols, swords) and the silversmith of General G. Karaiskakis bring to us the participation in the struggles and the glorious history of Salamis. The museum's collections also include icons of the post-Byzantine period, ecclesiastical vessels and holy objects (chalices, sanctuaries, wooden seals, belts, buckles) as well as rare 18th and 19th papers and rich photographic material from 1850 onwards, paintings and traditional musical instruments.
