Two Towers of Mytikas
The Two Towers are situated in the center of Evia island between the villages of Mytikas and Fylla. They are built close to each other, on a low hill with two peaks, at the foot of which flows the Lilandas River. They were built by the Venetians in 1205 AD, to protect the water supply system of Chalkis and the watering of the fertile plain of the area. They also offered shelter to local population in case of pirate or other hostile raids. From the top of the towers the guards overlooked the horizon and warned early the residents of the nearby villages, in case of severe threats. According to archives of 1429, in one of the towers lived a Venetian officer, who supervised the flow of the river and was responsible for keeping safe the water supply system of Chalkis.
The dimensions of the first tower are 6.10m x 6.10m and the entrance is 6m above the ground. This tower features four circular openings at the top of each side, making it the first clock-tower in Greece. The dimensions of the second tower are 7.5m x 7.0m. Both towers are preserved in good condition.
To reach the towers you have to drive from Mytikas to Fylla. Once you pass Mytikas, you will see the two towers on the left-hand side of the road.
