Μετάφραση Greek Version

One of the most charming traditions on the island of Kythnos is the custom of “Kounia” (the Swing), celebrated every Easter Monday in the heart of Chora. A large wooden swing is set up in the main square, where young men and women, dressed in traditional costumes, take turns swinging back and forth.

This symbolic act goes beyond fun—it’s a public expression of love and commitment. Traditionally, couples who took part in the swing pledged their feelings and even promised marriage. The custom dates back centuries, rooted in local courtship rituals, when young men invited the women they admired to swing. If the invitation was accepted, it was seen as a vow of affection and future union.

After the swinging, the celebration continues with a lively local feast, featuring authentic Kythnian dishes, plenty of wine, live music with violin and lute, and traditional Cycladic dancing. Locals and visitors alike join in, creating a festive atmosphere that captures the spirit and hospitality of the island.
