Kamena Vourla
Kamena Vourla is a cosmopolitan tourist resort in the prefecture of Fthiotida, which lies on the south coast of the Maliakos Gulf. The town was formerly known as Palaiochori. Knimis mountain rises just behind the beautiful seaside town which is renowned for its thermal springs, green mountains and peaceful atmosphere. The springs was the main reason that the town developed as a tourist resort during the 1960s and 1970s.
The famous thermal springs became important around 1926 when the chemist Michail Pertesis discovered the exceptionally high radon concentration in the water, which was thought of as a great value for people's health. Almost 10 years later the first modern hotels were built in the city. After World War II, Kamena Vourla gained a great reputation by attracting personalities from all over the world.
Right in front of the town there is a pebble beach with calm, crystal-clear waters. The seabed is covered with algae and fine sand. There are taverns, cafes and bars along the beach where visitors can taste nice food, traditional sweets, "loukoumades" or have a drink overlooking the Maliakos Gulf. Although Kamena Vourla is a popular destination for retirees due to its thermal baths, it can also be the base for excursions to the surrounding area.
At a distance of about 8 kilometers is the Monastery of Agia or Karya, officially the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior, of the 11th century. The view from the Monastery is stunning. Right in front stretches the town of Kamena Vourla, the Maliakos Gulf and a part of Evia. West of the spa town at a distance of 24 km towards Lamia, can be found the historic monument of Thermopylae with the imposing statue of Leonidas, the King of the Spartans. On the north side of Mount Kallidromo is located the historic castle of Mendenitsa. Finally a few kilometers away you can find Karya, one of the most beautiful mountain villages of the region. The area is also an ideal starting point for extensive walking and hiking tours.
Cape Knimis separates the Gulf of Maliakos from the North Euboean Gulf. Greek Seychelles, known as Lichadonisia, the breathtaking island with the turquoise waters, are only 10 minutes away by boat. Kamena Vourla is 175 km away from Athens and 40 km from the city of Lamia.
