Pavliani

Pavliani is built on the slopes of mountain Oiti and is one of the most mountainous villages in the Fthiotida region. It consists of two settlements, Nea Pavliani or Kato (Lower) Pavliani and Pavliani or Ano (Upper) Pavliani. Pavliani has been known since ancient times. Αt short distance and at an altitude of 1800 m. there are the ruins of an ancient temple dedicated to Hercules. As for its name, there are two versions. One states that it owes its name to its first inhabitants, who were the first to believe in the teachings of the Apostle Paul, but the most probable version is that it is of Slavic origin.

In recent years, Pavliani has turned into a a tourist resort, attracting lots of visitors throughout the year. Between the two districts there is a unique natural park at the springs of Asopos, with a magnificent path along the river. At the beginning of the park there is the music bridge and on the opposite side the Museum of Hydrokinesis, a stone building complex, which houses the Neropriono, the Watermill, the Mantani and the Nerotrivi. It is worth a visit to the church of Agios Athanasios in Ano Pavliani with the wood-carved iconostasis and the famous stone-built bell tower dating from 1868.

The village was part of the Habitat program, a pilot project that concerns the sustainable development of traditional villages and the execution of pilot renovation projects to upgrade them.
