Naousa
Amphitheatrically built on the eastern foothills of the Vermio Mountain, the historic town of Naoussa has an open view to the fertile plain of Macedonia. It is the second most important city of Imathia and a place rich in history, culture and natural beauty. Naousa is surrounded by orchards, producing peaches, apples, cherries and other fruits and is renowned for its vineyards and wine production. Naousa is a mono-varietal appellation, dedicated entirely to Xinomavro sold under the brand name “Naousa”. It is one of the great Greek wines, offering and amazing depth, breathtaking complexity and possibly the longest ageing potential of any dry Greek wine. The wine has received many national and international awards and was one of the first wines to be released and bottled.
Naousa is a picturesque city with an historical municipal park at its entrance. The park is an oasis of relaxation and recreation and the first historic park in Greece. In addition to this the park of Agios Nikolaos at the outskirts of town is a real jewel, not only for Naousa but for the whole region. The area also boasts top archaeological sites like Ancient Mieza and the school of Aristotle. The Mieza site includes the remains of the ancient town as well as glorious Macedonian Tombs and an ancient theater. The school of Aristotle is the place where Alexander the Great was taught until 340 B.C., together with the offspring of the aristocratic families of Macedonia, learning about philosophy, poetry, math and natural sciences.
Situated 510 km away from Athens and 90 km from Thessaloniki, Naousa is easily accessible by car, bus or train. You can visit the town all year round, depending on your activities and interests. Enjoy unique hiking routes in nature, go the famous ski resorts 3-5 Pigadia and Seli, visit some of the wineries and taste local wines or just stay in town and see up close special customs and traditions during the Cernibal period. The city has also a rich gastronomic scene, with lots of local dishes made of pure local products, so at the end of the day, sit at a tavern and try the Macedonian cuisine.
