Kotronas
Kotronas is a coastal village of Eastern Mani, situated in the eastern part of the peninsula. It is built on the site of ancient Teuthrone, one of the most important harbors of the area in antiquity. The peninsula was inhabited from the early Hellenistic years (before 2000 BC) and remains of the ancient city can still be found scattered in the area or integrated into houses and churches.
Kotronas is known for its traditional architecture, beautiful beaches, hospitality of its inhabitants as well as for the quality of food and fresh fish. It is a typical village of Mani, with stone-built houses, towers and cobbled streets. The church of Agios Charalambos in the center of the village is a typical sample of this architecture. Other remarkable churches, are Agios Nikolaos (St. Nicholas), built on top of the ancient temple of Artemis, Panagia (The Virgin) and Ypapanti, a one-room vaulted church with frescoes of the second half of the 19th century, that has been designated a monument. Opposite the port, is the small peninsula of Skopas, connected with the coast with a narrow strip of land, about 300 meters long covered with large dark pebbles.
Kotronas is located 8 km south of Sparta and 41 km from Gythio. Starting from Kotronas, one can discover the magic of Mani or can just stay in the village and enjoy the peace and tranquility it offers. Next to the port there is a small sandy beach with shallow waters, ideal for families with children but if you like adventure, you will find many beautiful beaches with crystal clear waters within walking distance of the village. Around the small port you can find a few tavernas and shops.
