Stavroupolis

Stavroupolis is a village of the Xanthi regional unit in northern Greece, approximately 20 km northwest of the city of Xanthi. At the beginning of the 19th century, the village experienced great prosperity due to the cultivation of tobacco. After the Asia Minor disaster in 1923, many refugees settled in the village coming from the coastal villages of Asia Minor. Until the 60s-70s when tobacco farming became unprofitable, Stavroupolis had acquired an economic boom which is reflected in the buildings. The buildings are of particular architectural interest, with most being two-story, stone-built with external balconies supported on wooden beams. Wander the picturesque streets around the Town Hall and travel back in time when the village was still a vibrant and important economic center of the region. Because of this unique architecture and well-preserved buildings, Stavroupolis has been designated a traditional settlement by the Ministry of Culture of Greece. It is worth noting that during the Bulgarian occupation in World War II, there was a concentration camp in the village where Bulgarian Communist Party workers and other dissidents of the ruling regime were held.

Stavroupolis and the Nestos Valley, including Nestos River, is a popular tour and holiday destination in northern Greece, especially for nature and outdoor sport enthusiasts. The area is a heaven for outdoor activities such as kayaking, rafting, hiking, mountain biking, off road driving and more. In addition, there are plenty of things to see, such as the meanders of the river Nestos from the hill of Prophet Ilias, and the Thracian Tempe. The forest of Chaintou is a short distance away, as is the picturesque village of Drymia, the forest village of Erymanthos and the Macedonian Tomb of Stavroupolis - the best-preserved Macedonian tomb in Thrace. In the wider area is Livaditis Waterfall, the largest waterfall in the Balkans in terms of quantity and volume of running water, as well as the cave at Livera. Stavroupolis is the ideal base for day trips to the surrounding villages including Lykodromio and the abandoned village of Kallithea, as well as to the most important points of interest in the wider area.
