The Feast of Lentils

The feast of Lentil is held in front of the church of Agios Donatos in the historic village of Eglouvi every August. The feast celebrates the yearly harvest of the legume. The highlight of the festival takes place after the ecclesiastical service when various dishes of lentils including fakes (lentil soup), fakorizo (lentil and rice pilaf) and revithada (slow-cooked chickpeas and lentils), are served along with sardines, olives and wine. The Eglouvi lentils are a rare and special variety of lentils, produced in the plateau of Agios Donatos. The climate and soil here are appropriate for such a cultivation. The prized Eglouvi lentils has participated in many gastronomy festivals and is renowned for its quality and taste. Most of the locals are engaged in the cultivation which is done in a traditional way. Visitors can immerse themselves in the local traditions and take part in traditional dancing, music, and other cultural events that are held throughout the festival.
