How to get to Lefkada

Μετάφραση Greek Version

By Boat

Lefkada is the only island in the Ionian Sea that is accessible by car from the mainland. Due to its short distance from the shore of Akarnania in Central Greece, the island is linked to the mainland with a 50-meter floating bridge. Therefore, getting there is easy if you have a car, and it saves on the ferry costs. There are different ways to drive to the island depending on where you are travelling from. From Athens to Lefkada is about a 5-hour drive (377 km – 234 mi). If you are heading to Lefkada from Northern Greece, the Balkans or Eastern Europe, then you will have to drive along the Egnatia Highway all the way to Ioannina and to Preveza before driving through the undersea tunnel in Aktion. Lefkada Town is 20 km from the tunnel exit.

By bus

If you want to get from Athens to Lefkada, you can either drive, or take a KTEL bus. Buses depart from Kifissos Bus Station in Athens. There is a bus several times a day, which takes about 5 hours. If you are travelling by plane to Athens, there is a regular and frequent shuttle bus, X93 between Athens Airport Arrivals and the Kifissos Intercity Bus Station. From Thessaloniki to Lefkada is about 5 hours’ driving. This bus service runs a couple of times a week.

Connection to other islands

Lefkada is connected with the other Ionian Islands by several ferry and boat services. The ferry from Kefalonia to Lefkada sets off twice a day from the picturesque port of Fiscardo. Another service links Vassiliki at the south tip of Lefkada, to Frikes in Ithaca. Finally, there is a ferry service between Nidri in Lefkada and Spilia in Meganisi. Times, days and routes are constantly changing, so check the timetable if you are planning island-hoping. Ferry companies serving Lefkada do not always publish timetables very far in advance. Also, occasionally timetables are disrupted by bad weather.

By Airplane

Lefkada's nearest airport is Aktion International Airport on mainland Greece. The airport is situated only 15 minutes (18km) away through the undersea tunnel. Aktion Airport receives international charter flights from all over Europe, and several of the Balkan countries. The summer season usually runs from May to October, with extra flights in June-September. At the time of writing (2023) this article, there are domestic flights linking Aktion/Preveza with Athens, Corfu and Zante. There is no scheduled bus service from the airport to Lefkada but you you can reach the island by car or taxi. Another way is to fly to Corfu. There are lots of flights to Corfu from all over Europe, so this route may be convenient for you. From Corfu airport, take a taxi to the port; then a ferry to Igoumenitsa.
