Loukas Gorge

The gorge of Loukas is probably the most impressive of the gorges in the prefecture of Laconia. It is located on the north side of Taygetos mountain, before the village of Kastorio, between the peaks of Agios Ioannis (Xerovouna) and Pyrgaki. This is a technical gorge of incredible natural beauty that requires knowledge of canyoning, good equipment and good physical condition.

In the gorge there are about 35 descents and some waterfalls, the most impressive of which is a 35 meters waterfall, located before the exit. The entrance is at an altitude of about 100 meters and the exit at an altitude of 480 meters. The best descent period is from March to April. During summer the gorge is arid. In order to reach the gorge, you have to first drive to the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi where you can park. Then you should cross its courtyard and follow the well-marked path that leads to the entrance of the gorge, after a 45 'minutes hike. The main feauture in the entrance is a concrete water tank.
