Kalipso Gorge

Calypso Gorge is a hidden gem on mainland Greece. Located near the village of Karitsa in the region of Thessaly, Calypso’s Gorge is definitely one of the most spectacular gorges in the entire country. It is situated on the eastern slopes of Mount Kissavos and offers many opportunities for adventure. Steep cliffs, waterfalls and many natural pools formed by emerald running water, offer visitors an opportunity to hike, climb, walk or swim. Surrounded by dense forests and towering cliffs, the gorge enthralls all visitors by its unique natural beauty and the amazing views over the Aegean Sea. It includes 6 rappels, 3 waterfall (with up to 70 meters height), plethora of natural pools and thermal springs at the end. Experienced climbers can rappel down a total of 6 rappels while hikers can just enjoy nice walks on a beautiful trail which leads to the waterfalls and the pools which are perfect for a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear water. 

There are two ways to approach the gorge. The first one is by hiking the uphill path from the coastal village of Kokkino Nero which leads to the gorge in about an hour and 30 minutes. The second way is by car. Drive towards Karitsa and just before entering the village, you will find signs pointing towards the gorge. The path is well maintained and signed. The descend lasts about 4-6 hours and the ideal period for hike is from May till late October. Calypso Gorge combines the excitement and fun of the activity with breathtaking views, so do not miss it!
