Kotsifos Gorge
Kotsifos Gorge is situated north of the town of Plakias, on the road between Selia and Angouseliana. Although smaller than the neighboring Kourtaliotiko gorge, it is equally impressive and noted for the large birds that live there and the high number of Cretan endemic plant species that grow in the area. With total length of 1.800 meters and some slopes, almost vertical, reaching the height of 600 meters, Kotsifos gorge is very narrow at the beginning, approximately 10 meters, but eventually the gorge widens out to 600 meters. Inside the gorge, there is a small church built in a rocky cavity, dedicated to Saint Nicholas, some ruined water mills as well as a tiny chapel dedicated to Saint Onoufrios.
The gorge starts at the village of Kanevos and ends up at Plakias. Starting from the village of Kanevos, you enter the riverbed and after of about an hour’s hiking, you will reach the bridge that connects the villages Selia and Myrthios. Along the way, there are some huge boulders that block the passage, but you can overcome them with some extra effort. At one point the gorge of Boutsinas meets Kotsifos gorge and a 20-meter-high waterfall. If you keep hiking along the riverbed, you will shortly come across a dirt road that heads backwards. This road leads to the water springs of Kotsifos and to a small pond. From that point onwards, the river has water throughout the year. From here, there are two options: you can either take a trail that leads to Plakias beach or you can walk along the riverbed all the way to Plakias, however oleanders and osiers are very dense making hiking tricky and difficult.
The gorge is located in the prefecture of Rethymno, on the south coast of the Greek island of Crete. It is one of the most beautiful gorges on the island and a trip to the Kotsifos Gorge is in an absolute must. There are some excellent photo opportunities, so do not forget to take with you your camera, fully charged batteries and an empty memory card. Just bear in mind the roads at times are very narrow and some are near the edge of a sheer drop. Definitely take this road while going down to Plakias or Preveli from Rethymnon and you can take another route on the way back to see Gorge of Kourtaliotis, which is very impressive too.
