Athamania (Steno) Gorge
Athamania Gorge or Steno Gorge as the locals call it, is located near the village of Athamania, (Moutsiara), in the prefecture of Trikala, Thessaly. Even though, it is not as famous as other gorges in Greece, it is undoubtedly a gorge of unparalleled natural beauty worth to discover. The entrance of the gorge is close to the small chapel of Agii Apostoli on the outskirts of the village. The route follows the river’s bed and, in many places, walking through the water is necessary. Τo reach the narrow and most impressive part of the gorge and its stunning waterfalls, you have to hike against the river’s current for some distance. The running water forms natural pools with refreshing and clear water where the most dare can swim. Along the way, you can admire beautiful geological formations from the sedimentary rocks on both sides of the gorge. The best time for hiking is from July to the end of October, when water level is low. Avoid to hike the gorge on a raining day or after rain, it is very dangerous. Appropriate boots and clothes are necessary, so are some extra clothes in case those you are wearing get wet. The gorge offers plenty of photo opportunities, so do take your camera with you and have your batteries fully charged. Hiking this gorge is a unique experience. The hike has a low degree of difficulty and is ideal for the whole family.
