Nemouta Waterfalls
The waterfalls of Nemouta are a series of gorgeous waterfalls, located 42 km east of Pyrgos in the boundaries between Arcadia and Elis, in the region of western Greece. They are 30 wtarefalls in total -15 to 25 meters high- but only 8 of them are easily accessible, while the rest need some trekking skills. They are not so well known and finding them is a challenge. The waterfalls of Nemouta also called Haratsari are “treasure” of natural beauty that excite anyone who visits the area.
There are two hikes, a long one beside Erymanthos river and then up in Nemouta, passing by the amazing waterfalls and another much shorter. The entire hiking trail follows the M3 path, which starts at the nearby village of Foloi at the natural history Museum and is 12 km long. Walking in the footsteps of the mythical hero Hercules when he was searching for the Erymanthian boar. The myth tells of Erymanthos Kapros, a mythical wild boar that symbolized the fury of the river when it flooded and caused disasters.
Best way to see the main waterfalls is starting from the free parking at the bridge over the river Erymanthos in Elai. Even this route still has some pretty bad sections and no signs, however, it doesn't seem as steep as the Nemouta road. Arriving at the river there is a parking lot, just behind a bridge. The main waterfall, lies about 10 minutes from the bridge. Follow the dirt road to the left until reaching a small stream. A small path runs next to the stream through the narrowing ravine. After a few minutes you see the first waterfall. From the first waterfall it is another 10 minutes walking to reach the second waterfall. You can walk further upstream to see another two gorgeous but smaller waterfalls. The waterfall itself drops down through a huge chasm covered in fir and other greenery giving the feeling of a tropical paradise rather than a Greek landscape. Both hikes are an experience worth trying and is very easy to do.
North of the parking there is also a nice waterfall in the river Erymanthos. You easily can spend a day visiting all waterfalls. Don't forget to take your swimsuit with you.
