A Hidden Natural Wonder Waiting in Western Greece
Tucked away at the entrance of Monastiraki village in Aetolia-Acarnania, Sepetos Waterfall is one of the most impressive and lesser-known natural attractions in Western Greece. Formed by the Sepetos River—an extension of the Kefalovrysos River—it plunges dramatically over a steep cliff, creating a breathtaking 80-meter drop that ends in a natural plunge pool surrounded by rugged rock formations.
The river’s source lies beneath the central square of the village, making it one of the area’s standout features. Visitors are instantly captivated as powerful jets of water cascade over massive boulders from the cliff’s edge, crafting an awe-inspiring scene of raw beauty and natural force.
Locally known as “Lampada” (meaning candle), the waterfall earned its nickname due to its straight, narrow flow that widens as it falls—resembling a giant white candle when viewed from a distance.
A Rewarding Adventure for Nature Lovers
Reaching Sepetos Waterfall requires effort: no road leads directly to it. Access is only possible via hiking trails, lovingly maintained by a group of local youth passionate about preserving their region’s natural treasures. While the path is challenging, the reward is more than worth it for adventurous travellers, hikers, and eco-tourists seeking something off the beaten path.
Discover the Enchanted Fairy Cave Nearby
A short walk from the waterfall lies Neraidospilia (Fairy Cave), a hidden gem with a steady internal temperature of 18°C. Inside, visitors will find striking stalactite and stalagmite formations. According to local folklore, a fairy once lived in the cave, adding a magical layer to your visit. Don’t miss the chance to explore this mystical spot while in the area.
