Valta Waterfall
The region of Messene is well known for its gorgeous beaches, interesting archaeological sites, majestic castles but mostly for its natural beauty. The Polylimnio and Neda waterfalls are the best known in the area, but there is one more equally beautiful waterfall near the village of Valta, 5 km north of Gargalianoi, the waterfall of Valta. The Valta waterfall is located in a place of unique natural beauty, and can be easily visited on foot along a footpath. There is a forest in the area, crossed by a river at the banks of which beautiful waterfalls and lakes are formed. The waterfall and the pond formed in front of it, attract a large number of visitors who come here to see this hidden gem and to dive into the pond's refreshing water. The best seasons to visit the Valta waterfall is winter, spring or early summer so there is still running water. Unfortunately, during summer time its waters dries up.
The forest is also crossed by an old path, that the residents of Valta used as pass to reach the village of Filiatra. At the opposite hill named Kastraki, traces of a prehistoric settlement and box shaped tombs have been discovered. Moreover, there are the ruins of a palace where Helena de Bruyeres, best known as “Madame de Morena” used to live. To reach the waterfall of Valta follow the road that takes you out of the village and leads to the main road Gargaliani - Filiatra. At a distance of about two kilometers from the village, turn left to the relative sign. After a short dirt track, you will reach the church of Evangelistria and the beginning of the path that will first take you to the forest and then to the waterfall.
