Polilimnio Waterfalls
The Polilimnio waterfalls are located in the Polylimnio gorge in the region of Messene, in the Peloponnese. In Greek, polilimnio translates to many lakes and that’s what you’ll discover. There are 15 little “hidden” lakes filled with fresh water with different and strange names such as Mavrolimna, Kadi, Kadoula (which was named after its heart-like shape), Lucky’s, Italian’s, Panagos’s, Stathoula’s. Polilimnio often described as a paradise on earth and is one of the hidden gems of Messene.
After walking along a short path and having passed through lush vegetation and picturesque wooden bridges you will find yourselves in a secret paradise made of small lakes created by spectacular waterfalls, surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. The trekking path is about 3 kilometers long. Kadi Lake features the biggest waterfalls that drop from a height of 25 meters.
At many of the lakes, gorgeous waterfalls drop into stunning aqua blue waters with the largest pool and waterfall at the top, where the water is deep. The waterfall offers a unique experience to whoever reaches it, while for the more adventurous, cliff diving from the surrounding rocks into the lake’s deep waters, is also an option. The lake’s fresh, clear cold mountain water is extremely refreshing after the hike – the perfect reward.
The path up the gorge is not long but is steep and rocky in many places and anyone with walking difficulties would find it quite challenging. Some metal hoops have been put into the rocks in various places to help you clamber over the large ones but the path has been left very rugged.
Small canyons, dense vegetation and gorgeous waterfalls will turn a 3 kilometres hike of medium difficulty into a unique and unforgettable experience. The canyon’s water coming from Mesopotamos river, after passing under the Tzane bridge, flows into the lap of the Messinian Bay. If you follow the canyon downwards you will reach the cave of the beautiful butterflies.
The waterfalls are located in a region about 30 miles from the city of Kalamata. To reach Polilimnio you have to follow the road from Kalamata to Pylos all the way to the village of Kazarma and the village of Charavgi. From Charavgi you can locate the walking path to Polilimnio. It is necessary to have a swimsuit with you as long as you intend to swim, suncream, hat, water and should wear non-slip shoes.
