Skra Waterfalls

The waterfalls of Skra with its magnificent and famous emerald lake, is a hidden gem, located between the villages of Skra and Koupa in the prefecture of Kilkis, in Macedonia, Northern Greece. The lake which is formed by the water of the waterfalls is also known as the “Blue Lake” or "Emerald Lake". It owes its name to the aquamarine color of the water due to the calcified and fossilized organisms on its bottom. The waterfalls are well-hidden in a dense deciduous forest, crossed by the Kotza - Dere stream.

Skra is a small mountain village near the borders with FYROM on the northeast slopes of Mount Paiko, at an altitude of 520m. Five kilometers away from the village, is the starting point of the path leading to the beautiful waterfalls, probably the most magical corner of the mountain. Walking along the path you will soon reach the first waterfall. At its root there is a small cave with stalactites. Water, pops up between oaks and plane trees covered with ivy, offering a fascinating sight. A little further is the breathtaking "Blue Lake", a unique place that will impress you with the beauty of nature. If you are brave enough you can swim in the refreshing and pure but freezing waters of the lake. Once in the area, the Skra waterfalls is a must visit place. The path is children friendly even if you have to descent approximately 100 steps. This paradise-like place will for sure reward you with its beauty.
